About/History of Sheffield

Sheffield is a city located in South Yorkshire with a population of about 555,500. The city has grown over time from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base. During the 19th century the city gained an international reputation for steel production with many innovations such as crucible and stainless steel being developed locally. This reputation for steel production led to the city earning the nickname of the “Steel City”. The city is home to the world’s first-ever official football club, Sheffield F.C., and also the world’s second-ever, Hallam F.C., with the latter playing at the world’s oldest football ground. In the city the biggest football teams are Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday who both currently play in Football League One. The city has close ties with snooker with the World Snooker Championships being hosted at the city’s Crucible Theatre. In music, the city has been the birthplace of several well known bands that include artists such as Joe Cocker, Def Leppard, Pulp and Bring Me the Horizon. More recently indie bands such as Arctic Monkeys have emerged from the city in what NME dubbed the New Yorkshire Movement
