About/History of Edinburgh

Edinburgh is Scotland’s second biggest city and also its capitol. With a population of 486,120 Edinburgh is the seventh most populous city in the United Kingdom. The city is one of the historical centres of the enlightenment, led by the University of Edinburgh, helping it to earn the nickname of the “Athens of the North”. The city hosts the annual Edinburgh Festival where there is a mix of official and unofficial events and is held over a period of four weeks during August. Some of the best known of these festivals are the Edinburgh Fringe, Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Edinburgh is also home to a wide range of sports teams including the Scottish national Rugby and Cricket teams. Many famous and notable scientists are connected with the city with Alexander Graham Bell born and educated in the city. Authors such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Ian Rankin are also from Edinburgh.
